Emmanuel (Hebrew. “God is with us”). The symbolic name for a child announced by Isaiah to King Ahaz (Isaiah 7:14). Matthew interprets this sign as a prophecy of Jesus’ birth (Matthew 1:23) and concludes his gospel with the related promise “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20).
