Heart of Jesus, bruised for our sins, have mercy on us.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed.

Then he released for them Barab’bas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. (Matthew 27:26)
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barab’bas; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. (Mark 15:15)
Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. (John 19:1)

The Roman punishment of scourging was carried out with a whip called a flagellum, which consisted of leather strips that had embedded shards of metal, bone and/or seashell.
