The parish my family belongs to, “Our Lady of Good Counsel” did something very special on the feast day (April 26) for this title of our Blessed Mother. We prayed the rosary, ALL FOUR mysteries, before the Blessed Sacrament on the alter. The prayer concluded with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

I have never prayed all four mysteries, (joyful, luminous, sorrowful, and glorious) continuously like that. I have also never prayed the rosary before the Blessed Sacrament.  It was an amazing experience. It lasted about 90 minutes, and it seamed like the quickest 90 minutes of my life.  We prayed the mysteries in the chronological order of the life of Jesus.  It was “indescribable”  to meditate on these 20 events in the life of Jesus, one after another. Perhaps that is why the time seamed to move so quickly.  This time of deep contemplative prayer brought with it a feeling of deep unity with Jesus, and His Church (including the Angels and Saints).  A depth that I am not able to achieve with a typical 12 to 15 minute rosary.

If you are looking to increase the depth of your prayer I recommend praying the rosary before the Blessed Sacrament for three reasons:

  1.  The Blessed Sacrament:  When you understand the doctrine of “The Real Presence”, it changes everything.
  2.  The Rosary: It is not just a prayer, it is a method for learning (and experiencing) mediation and contemplation. (see my 35 page paper “The Stages of Prayer” for more details).
  3.  Community: While a personal relationship with Jesus is necessary, wonderful, fantastic (I could go on and on), we are called to live in community “in the Body of Christ”.
