Starting with a few words about Padre Pio is a good way to introduce this book. St. Pio had many gifts from the Holy Spirit, the most famous of these was the Stigmata. For over 50 years the had this gift about which he wrote in March 1919, “Since September 20 of last year, after the appearances of a heavy personage, (Christ Crucified), I found my hands and feet pierced and an open wound close to the heart. I don’t want you to begin to hold me, a wretch, in high regard as a result of this revelation. Admire the marvels of the Lord and nothing else.” (page 12)

The format of the book is simple and effective in presenting St. Pio’s words about our relationship with the Lord. Each of the 150 psalms/ reflections is on a page by itself. Each Psalm has a title, followed by one verse from the Psalm. This is followed by a one-sentence reflection or question about the verse. Next is the main part of the page, a few paragraphs of St. Pio’s words. Note: while his words were not specifically written for these Psalms, the author has done a brilliant job of researching the letters and writings of St. Pio and found perfect matches for these Psalm verses. It is such a brilliant job that these few paragraphs seem to be divinely inspired explanations the meaning of the Psalm and how we are to relate to that Psalm verse, and as an extension, how we are to develop our relationship with God the Father, Jesus and The Holy Spirit. The last item on the page is a one or two sentence prayer (composed by the author, Eileen).

Each Psalm/reflection takes about 60 to 90 seconds to read. The great value of this book, however, is not the one minute spent reading each of the 150 Psalms, but in the time spent thinking and meditating upon the words of St. Pio. Spending 5 or 60 minutes or a day thinking about this psalm verse with help to understand it from someone who was so deeply immersed in the love that the Lord has for each one of us, is a priceless experience.
